The IRS Tax Form 2290 Heavy Vehicle Use Tax (HVUT) is an annual tax reported on heavy motor trucks operated on public highways. All truckers, truck owners, owner-operators, trucking companies who own and operate heavy motor vehicles with a gross weight of 55,000 pounds or more, estimated to drive 5,000 miles or more on public highways must file IRS Form 2290 and pay the annual federal excise tax in full.

The 2290 tax is due from July 1 of current year to June 30 of following year, and you must have it paid by August 31st for existing fillers under your name. If the fleet size is 25 or more the 2290 tax form MUST be filed electronically. For registration purposes the 2290 tax must be paid in the name of the owner of the truck or the registrant of the vehicle along with the Schedule -1 copy filled in the vehicle identification number. The IRS stamped (watermarked) Schedule -1 acts as a proof of filing and need to be produced to the DMV to register or renew vehicle permits, tags and plates.

Whether you're a private, for-hire, or specialized carrier, you can electronically prepare and report Federal Form 2290 tax reports at TruckDues.com. While reporting 2290 tax, you could adjust the sold or traded vehicle credits and low mileage credits on vehicles from previous tax years. For a vehicle destroyed, stolen or sold before June 1, a credit for tax paid can be claimed on the next Form 2290 or a refund of the tax paid can be claimed on form 8849m schedule-6.

Suspended Vehicle Exceeds Mileage

If a vehicle reported as suspended crosses the mileage use limit (i.e. 5000 Miles or 7500 Miles) then the vehicle becomes taxable and should be reported to the IRS by checking “Amended Return” in form 2290.
